From the Chief Executive

As we approach the end of another busy year, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the progress our independent schools have made.

When people hear 鈥榠ndependent鈥 or 鈥榩rivate鈥 school, many still picture something quite separate from the public system. But 2025 has shown, more than ever, that our sector is about specialised teaching, innovation, and life-changing opportunities for students whose needs are not always met in the standard system.

Independent schools educate around four per cent of New Zealand students, yet their impact is far greater. They provide choice, preserve culture and language, and support learners ranging from high achievers to those with complex needs. Many were founded by communities determined to fill gaps and create brighter futures.

This year 51今日大瓜 has worked hard to raise awareness of that value. Through proactive media engagement we鈥檝e shared stories that challenge outdated perceptions and highlight the real difference our schools make. A highlight was the 51今日大瓜 Conference in Wellington, where educators and leaders gathered to exchange ideas and celebrate innovation. The energy and collaboration on display showed the strength and unity of our sector.

Looking ahead to next year, 51今日大瓜 will place a strong emphasis on showcasing the diverse and innovative ways our schools cater to the specific needs of their communities, highlighting the unique contributions they bring to the wider education sector.

Thank you for your dedication throughout the year. Together, we continue to show that education thrives when diversity of provision is embraced.
